Getting rejected from jobs is all part of the job searching process. However, if the rejections keep coming and you don’t feel like you are getting anywhere with your job search, you’re probably looking for some answers.

“Why do I keep getting rejected from jobs?” is a question that many job seekers want answers to. Below are a few suggestions that will hopefully help you out.

You’re not preparing well enough

If you find yourself being rejected after interviews, then the positive side is that you are actually being invited to interviews in the first place! That’s one hurdle you seem to have cracked.

When attending interviews, you need to stand out from other candidates and demonstrate that you are passionate about the role and company you are interviewing for. The key is in your preparation.

Find out as much as you can about the company (including their customers and challenges), the industry and even your interviewer. You should then weave the knowledge you have into your answers and make the interviewer see that you will be able to easily transition into their company and role.

You can never do too much preparation for a job interview.

You’re not making the most of feedback

If you’re rejected from a job, then you have an ideal opportunity to ask for feedback. Practice makes perfect, but if you don’t know where you went wrong you won’t be able to perfect your interview technique.

Request feedback from employers who turn you down and make improvements where possible for next time. You may also want to discuss your CV, applications or interviews with friends or connections who can help you pinpoint how you can improve.

You’re not addressing your interviewers’ concerns

When asking your own questions at the end of an interview, you could directly ask the interviewer if they have any concerns about you. It’s quite a bold move, but you’ll then have the opportunity to address any concerns on the spot.

For example, they may be concerned that you’ll have a long commute and may burn out because of it. If you are aware of this you can reassure them that you are keen to relocate, or that you have already planned your journeys to work.

You’re not applying for roles that are a good fit for you

You may actually be looking at industries or roles that just aren’t the best fit for your skills and personality. You need to be applying for opportunities that you are actually passionate about and can see yourself enjoying, otherwise how will you be able to demonstrate that you are keen in your interviews?

If you think this may be the case, go back to the drawing board and assess:

  • What type of employer do I want to work for?
  • What working environment would I prefer?
  • What are my greatest strengths and how can I use them in my career?

Answering these questions should give you a rejuvenated sense of purpose and make you feel more confident about finding a job you love and applying for future roles.

Bringing it all together

There are plenty of reasons why you may be getting rejected from jobs. If you want to be successful in the future, you’ll need to assess what you are doing, ask for feedback and aim to improve every time.

We also recommend that all job seekers register with CV-Library so that employers and recruiters can find your CV online and you’ll hear about the latest opportunities!

  2. Job hunting is such a dehumanizing and demoralizing process. Often times in the US employers don’t provide feedback on rejections for legal reasons.
